Retirement can bring the freedom to try something new. It can also take a little time to discover what feels enjoyable. As we explore on our Retirees page, painting offers a simple place to begin, especially when there is someone to share the experience with.
Perhaps Dad painted at school but has not picked up a brush since. Perhaps Dad has always said he is “not artistic”. Neither needs experience to enjoy an afternoon with colour, conversation and a cup of tea.
Start without the pressure of a blank page
A blank sheet of paper can be surprisingly daunting. Where do you begin? What are you meant to paint? A guided template answers that first question while still leaving plenty of room to choose colours and make the picture your own.
Keep the table simple: a protected surface, a few paints, brushes, water and one project to start with. There is no need to set up an art class or plan an entire afternoon. Even 30 minutes can be a lovely beginning.
If someone says, “I can’t paint,” you do not have to persuade them otherwise. You might say, “Let’s just try a little colour here,” and start painting alongside them. The invitation is to enjoy the process, not prove a skill.
Make it something you do together
Painting gives a visit a shared focus. You can talk while you work, or sit quietly for a while. A colour might bring up a memory of a garden, a holiday or a family home. Equally, the conversation might be about what to have for lunch. There is no story anyone has to tell.
You can each paint your own version of the same template. You might use bright colours while Dad chooses softer ones or help with a small detail if she asks. The pictures do not need to match, and neither has to be finished in one sitting.
That flexibility matters. If a hand gets tired or the afternoon takes another turn, put the brushes down and come back later. The painting will wait.
A gift for a new chapter
A guided painting kit can be a thoughtful gift for a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or recently retired friend. It offers more than something to unwrap: it gives them a new activity to try and, if they wish, an easy way to spend time with someone they care about.
You can give it ahead of a visit and make a date to paint together. If you live interstate or overseas, you can have the box delivered to them in Australia and join in over a video call. Having something to do together can make that call feel a little different from the usual catch-up.
Artful Connections Guided Painting Kits include three printed templates, acrylic paints, brushes, a mess mat, conversation cards and step-by-step video guidance from Deb. The materials are ready when they are, whether they want to paint independently or share the experience.
There is no “right” age to begin
Trying something new in retirement does not have to mean taking on a big challenge. It can be as simple as opening a box, choosing a colour and making the first brushstroke.
The finished picture may become something to display or give away. But the best part might be the hour spent at the table: painting, chatting, pausing and enjoying something new together.
